Camera Technique Notes

INTERVIEWING:
• What seven items should you bring with you when you are shooting an interview?
(Clocks Tick Tock Making Heads Pound Loudly)
C Camera
T Tape
T Tripod

M Microphone (About a hang losose symbol away from their mouth)
H Head Phones
P Power Source
L Light






• Shooting into a light source = Light should always be behind the camera. Shooting into a light source causes a SILHOUETTE. (Dark Photo/ A poorly lit shot)

Button to adjust = Back light button or a flash so you don't have a silhouette.


• Where do you want your light source? Light should always be behind the camera.


• On what object should you focus the camera? The nose


• No tripod= Bad


• Date and Time= This is permanately recorded on your tape


• What's the difference between SP/EP? Standard Play on tape Extended Play- will allow you to record more.

• Camera shoots in SP.

• Pre-Roll- 2-3 Seconds before you start your interview, so you don't cut anything they say off, and so you have room to edit.


• Post-Roll- 2-3 Seconds after your interview, so you don't cut off what they say, and have room to edit.


CAMERA SHOTS:

***BACKGROUND:  DYNAMIC: has some depth, not plain.
Interview at least 6-8 feet from the wall

• 1 Shot= Middle of the chest to the head, centered in the frame (Usually above the mic)

• 1 Shot with graphic= Middle of the chest to the head, but panned to the side so you can see the graphic.

• 2 Shot= Only for anchors where they are interacting.

• CU- Close Up, Zoomed in on an object.

• MS- Medium Shot, Half of a person or just not as close as a close up.

• LS- Long Shot, Whole body.

• ECU- Extreme Close Up, Very zoomed in.

• Rule of thirds- Imaginary lines to help frame the shot.


CAMERA MOVEMENTS:
• Tilt- When you move the camera up and down. Follow something thats going up or down.


• Pan- Side to side (Left to right).


• Zoom- Getting closer or farther away from an object. To see something clearer.


• Dolly- Pysically moving your camera (Usually on wheels).

LIGHTS
• Key- The strongest light that does most of the lighting and is at a 45 degree angle.


• Fill- Fills in the shadows from the other direction, 45 degree angle from the Key light.


• Back- Seperates the subject from the background.


MICROPHONES:
• Unidirectional- Picking up sound from one direction.
• Omnidirectional- Picks up sound from all directions. (Most cameras)
• Cardiod- Heart shaped microphone, picks up some sound from the side but NOT from the back.
• Lav/Lapel Microphone- One that clips on to your shirt
• Boom Microphone- Microphone thats on a stick, Unidirectional
